The Principles of Tithing
Tithing is an expression of devotion and stewardship. Tithing is more of a heart issue than a financial one
How do we calculate tithe?
Traditionally, tithe is calculated from the “first fruits” of the harvest and is equal to 10% of the entire harvest (increase). The word tithe literally means tenth in Hebrew.
“Honor the Lord with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; Then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” Proverbs 3:9
“If the first piece of bread is offered to the Lord, then the whole loaf is made holy.” Romans 11:16 (ERV)
A sage was once asked: Should I pay tithe on my gross or net income? The sage answered: “Which do you want blessed?
How should tithing be spent?
Tithing funds should be gifted to the spiritual organization that is providing services to the donator’s spiritual needs, wellbeing and education. It is intended to cover expenses such as: personal, buildings and general operations. It is paid from the “first fruits” and is considered a return to its source, God and is always given before other income gifts are dispersed.
Tithing is an expectation
The spiritual admonitions to pay a tithe are quite clear throughout history.
“Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and” Malachi 3:8*
*Rob (Heb) qaba - to cover, like a goblet, to put your hand on top to keep it from pouring out, to obstruct or obscure God, hindering Him from pouring out a blessing. God wants to remove the obstruction and pour out a blessing!
To whom & where should I pay my tithe?
“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.” Malachi 3:10
